Moving On

Moving On

Life has a funny way of pushing us forward despite our efforts or desires - moving us along. We can't control the flow, speed or tack of life, but we can affect the quality of the process and the target direction of the destination.

The last baby bird is taking flight and winging her way toward the next chapter of her life. The deposit has been put down on the apartment, the truck is all packed up (thanks again to the "Moving Gang" - you know who you are), and Target/Bed, Bath and Beyond/Ikea have been scoured for their sundry new abode necessities.

It's going to be a big change for all of us: new homes, new roommates, new jobs, new traffic patterns, new favorite go-to restaurants - lots of changes. It could have been easier to just stick with the status quo, but in order to move on to the next chapters for all involved, it was essential to paddle knowingly out into the deep water, clutch tightly to our "surfboard,” lean into the next big wave, and jump on for the ride. There are no promises that it will be easy, there are no certainties of the results, and there are no guarantees that tears won't be shed (by some or by all). But the assurance that life will keep propelling us all onward is real and exciting. It's not a matter of complete acquiescence, but rather the awareness that movement (change) is inevitable, and making the most of the journey will add as much to enjoyment of the process as it will to the achievement of potential success (the first of many).

Similarly, cancer has a way of forcing the agenda and dictating what will be your next move for an indeterminate amount of time (based on diagnosis, required chemo, medical interventions and prognosis). In each case, we need to relent to the journey, but fight tooth-and-nail on both the course of action and your level of involvement in contributing to your outcome.
